High Plains Church Unitarian Universalist

Community Service

High Plains members are engaged in a number of programs that promote human rights and social justice.

A team of HPCUU volunteers acts as an “extended family” to support parents with foster children. The team meets with the foster parents and a professional staff member from the Fostering Hope Foundation once per month to find out the needs of the family and to schedule help to meet those needs. Currently, HPCUU is working with two foster families. As a Welcoming Congregation, we are open to working with all types of families, including those with a single parent or same-sex parents. If you are interested in finding out more about this program, please contact Laura Moody at laura.moody@fosteringhopefoundation.org.

Meals on Wheels

Drivers deliver meals once a week on Tuesdays. It takes 1 to 1 ½ hours for delivery once containers are picked up at Silver Key. For more information, contact mealsonwheels@hpcuu.org.

Marion House Soup Kitchen

On the third Saturday of every other month, High Plains Church members volunteer at the Marian House Soup Kitchen, which provides hot meals to those in our community who might otherwise go hungry. If you are 14 or older, you can volunteer to work either the 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. shift or the 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. shift. During the first shift, we cook the food; during the second shift, we serve food, bus tables, and wash dishes. For more information contact Gail Ballaer at soupkitchen@hpcuu.org.

Habitat for Humanity

The Habitat for Humanity HPCUU team helps the community by participating in building affordable homes in Colorado Springs every other month. We work Saturday morning and afternoon shifts. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with the family who is destined to be the homeowner. To participate in this program, contact Al Sly at Habitat@hpcuu.org.

Every December our congregation joins the Adopt-a-Family program in providing gifts or gift cards to a family in need. The gift tree will be up in December. To suggest a family, contact Alcira Estevez or Gail Ballare at adoptafamily@hpcuu.org.
